My aunt and uncle wanted to take us to Jose's Real Cuban Food of course we jumped at the chance, we all love Cuban food. The restaurant was featured on Food Network's Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, and I was a little hesitant, just not so sure about it. The place is incredibly small...just 4 tables along the wall and then the counter. I was very impressed with the staff and how comfortable they make you feel. They greet you right away, and will work out a place for you to sit. They restaurant does a lot of take out, and I can see why, just for the size, but we live about 25 minutes away so we were staying.
There was plenty of staff on hand to take care of us. I ordered Lechon Asado - Arroz con frijoles negros, yucca o platanitos…"House Signature" Roast pork, black beans and rice, yucca or fried plantains. I couldn't decide between the yucca or plantains so she said I could have both! It was so good, the pork just melted in your mouth.
Everyone else got the Cuban sandwich and black beans...the lunch special. I didn't get a picture of that sorry...I was must of been too busy eating. He uses his roast pork on the Cuban so it makes it extra special. After eating the yucca, I just had to see if I could make it like that. I've made yucca fries, mashed yucca, and used yucca in my salmon cakes, but have never made the buttery tender yucca like this.
Cuban style yucca (cassava)
Ingredients:
1 pound of yucca I used frozen, but you can use the fresh root
1 quart water
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon butter
1/2 small onion minced
2 cloves garlic chopped
salt and pepper to taste
Method:
Place the yucca in a pan and fill with water until the yucca is covered, add salt. Bring to a boil, then simmer until tender, about 30 minutes. Drain and remove woody fiber in center of yucca.
Meanwhile in another pan cook the onions in oil until soft, add garlic and butter, stir and cook until garlic is fragrant and butter melted, you can add a squeeze of lemon if you like. Pour the mixture over the yucca salt and pepper to taste and serve.
Dose it seem like when you see a really colorful sunset you are in a parking lot coming out of a store. Or in your car driving? Well I was just lucky to have my camera in the car with me, but it was my old camera so it really didn't do it justice.
and then driving home...
I was careful! It looks like nobody is on the road with me. It was such a pretty sight!
Anyway we really enjoyed the our experience at Jose's and will be back again for sure. My aunt and uncle live in Bradenton so when we go up to see them we can try it again, maybe I'll try something else next time. The best part was the food leftover for lunch the next day!

The food sounds delicious and I had no idea you could eat yucca, I have never seen in a shop frozen or otherwise! Have a good weekend, Diane
ReplyDeleteDiane, we can find the yucca root in the grocery store, I think I posted a pic on another yuca post. Then I found how easy it was to get the frozen yuca or cassava...same thing. Found in the Latin food freezer section. It comes out pretty much the same.
DeleteLove the photos! It can be so fun to try restaurants from TV. It always feels a bit surreal.
ReplyDeleteYes, I was really surprised on how small it was, they had more staff than diners. I would go again!
DeleteI love Jose's and go there often. Try the Picadilla next time. OMG.
ReplyDeleteThe last time we went with my husband and he did get the Picadilla. I didn't get to try it. So much food! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteI LOVE cuban food...especially yucca and plantains! So delicious. I'm so glad you could recreate the yucca!
ReplyDeleteand it was so simple too!
DeleteI have never had any cuban food. The yucca sounds delicious.
ReplyDeleteThe click of way home looks amazing.
It was fun! I'm glad they turned out some.
DeleteMy parents went to Cuba a while back, and came back raving about the food. Sadly I have never had it before, but it's never too late to try it!
ReplyDeleteAt least it is pretty easy to make at home, like black beans and rice, or the Cuban sandwich.
DeleteI have never tried Cuban food. The way you describe it makes me hungry :D I love yucca. That's one of our childhood food. Any time we were hungry, we would go to out to our backyard and look for yucca plants. Then we would dig into the soil and pull out some big yucca. We would bring home, peel of the skin, cut into big chunks and boil them. It's really nice dipped in sugar, and very filling too.
ReplyDeleteLove those sunset shots.....beautiful!
I love how food brings back such memeories. Thanks for sharing yours.
DeleteHow fun to discover places like this. There's nothing like a good Cuban sandwich and Florida makes the best. Other than that, I know practically nothing about Cuban food. Thanks for being our guide.
ReplyDeleteSam
Next time you come up we'll have to go for Cuban food! They don't use a lot of chilies like other Caribbean countries do.
DeleteSometimes tiny places like this have the best food! Everything sounds delicious!
ReplyDeleteThey sure do, I want to go back for more.
DeleteOh Lyndsey, I love yucca but never had it this way...I have some frozen yucca in the freezer and I will try this recipe...yum!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recipe and hope you have a wonderful week ahead :)
It's really an easy way to prepare it and you wouldn't think it could come out so buttery soft.
DeleteI don't think I have ever tried Cuban food. I hope to try some delicious Cuban food some day.
ReplyDeleteI hope you get to try it sometime!
DeleteI've never tried Cuban food. I heard from my mommy friend that there is a popular Cuban food in the neighborhood and we've been planning to check it out. Never tried yucca, and now I know the name and I'd love to try all kinds of delicious food! I love the photos - you did take some amazing moments!
ReplyDeleteThanks Nami. We enjoy trying all kinds of different cuisines. I hope you try it sometime. There are a few other root veggies I have yet to try...next is malanga.
DeleteSo funny, that I just mentioned about the 'mom and pop' Mexican restaurants in my previous comment... when we also have the Cuban 'mom and pop' restaurants, as well! Yesterday, my son invited me over for dinner, and he ordered take-out from the smallest of all...Thai restaurant, that doubles as a little Asian market! Most amazing Thai food...ever!
ReplyDeleteYou and I think so alike...I too, always seem to be in my car or in a parking lot when we have the glorious sunset, and most of the time I don't have my camera with me...you, at least captured a beautiful sunset scene...with, or without your good camera:D
We are lucky living in Florida...so many people from all over setteled here. So then we get to explore all these tiny restaurants and such! I have more to go.
DeleteYes, great minds :D
i've never tried cuban food. I like cassavas too and most of the time eat them like dessert, as in sweet soup. So you do pack leftovers? sorry asking you that becos i thought only most malaysians or asians have this habit :)
ReplyDeleteI will have to try cassava in a dessert. I do know they use cassava flour to make a cake. Lena, you bet I take home leftovers. Sometimes I order something knowing I can take home and use for another meal or lunch! :)
DeleteIf it was featured on Triple D, you know it has to be good! It sounds amazing and I love the sunset!
ReplyDeleteThanks Megan. It was fun. We have a few places that was featured on Food vs Man too.
DeleteLooks delicious! I've never tried it but definitely will now :)
