Ginger Mango Boba or Bubble Tea - and some vintage finds

Bubble tea or boba is such a fun drink. We bought some at a Vietnamese store next to my husband's shop, it was good but they made it with the powder flavors and it just tasted so artificial. So time to make it at home with fresh ...or frozen fruit.

I found some of the large tapioca pearls at the same Asian store, I have some black ones too. I couldn't find anything but the quick-ready in 5 minutes ones.

Cook them in boiling water and then pour honey or sprinkle with brown sugar, stir and let them cool. I cooked 1/2 cup in 2-3 cups water. Let the water boil first then add the tapioca pearls, cook according to the directions or for 15 minutes then turn off the heat and let set for 15 minutes, then drain, sprinkle and cool until ready to use.

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup crushed ice
  •  1-2 tea bags (green or black tea)
  • 3 pieces or peeled and cut ginger
  • honey or sugar to taste
  • 1 cup milk (coconut, almond, sweetened condensed, any milk you like) to taste
  • 1/2 cup mango puree, or any fruit nectar that you like ( I should of used more)
  • 2-3 tablespoons of cooked cooled tapioca pearls

In a sauce pan heat up the water and add the ginger and let it cook for about 10 minutes...add the tea bags and if using sugar add it now so it will dissolve...let steep until tea is nice and strong and sugar dissolved, if using honey add it after the tea is strong and turn off the heat so honey is not cooked just dissolved. If using sweetened condensed milk add it to the warm tea mix so it will melt a little. Remove the tea bags and ginger pieces and let cool some before combining.

Combine all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker (I added the pearls last) or just mix it all up really good add the pearls and serve with a fat milk shake straw so you can suck up all those yummy, soft, chewy tapioca pearls...and enjoy.

  2. I've been intrigued by bubble tea for a few years now but have yet the opportunity to try it. Didn't realize you can make it at home. Where are the best places to try to find it where they make it naturally?

    1. Not sure of where they make it without the powder mix. It's pretty easy to find the tapioca pearls and so easy to make yourself really. I found the straws at Big Lots and was thrilled.

    1. I know tapioca has other names such as yucca, cassava, and sago too. The French use tapioca pearls in desserts. Hope you can find it, it's fun to try.

  4. Lyndsey I was horrified to read your comment. I had a lot of problems with google+ because (I think) our slow connection. I went back to normal, and it now means that I now have problems following people who are on it. I missed your post and am only now catching up with your news. I can only say how very sorry I am and I am glad the guy has been dealt with. My Godmother was murdered a number of years ago in the UK. They knew who it was but could never prove it, he got off scott free! Please know, that even now I am a bit late in the day, my thoughts are with you and I can imagine just how difficult it must be for you. Take care Diane

    1. Thank you for your condolences it is never too late. I know that I think about it every day and it is still so fresh in my mind. They might of charged the guy but it's a long way to get him to trial and prove it. Sorry to hear about your Godmother's murder I can't imagine have the murderer still out there. Take care yourself Diane, I know how frustrating computer issues are :).

  5. Hi Lyndsey, so nice to see you blogging again since the last time about a month ago~ Love your vintage thrift finds! I also have the pink pyrex, dish, different shape, and solid color...not a thrift find; something that I've had for years, along with the turquoise color bowls, with the designs. So seldom do I find these kind of vintage great stuff. You are so fortunate to find these treasures.

Your creative and refreshing drink would be a welcome change for me right now!

    1. Thanks Elisabeth, I have some of the turquoise dishes with designs too. I have a lot of refrigerator ware that I've had for years in the turquoise and some yellow. I have some lusterware too, such fun! the gold ones above are not so much the colors I keep. I like the aqua and pink. I will be sure to show more as we go! I love seeing your thrift finds too.

  7. I had never heard of bubble tea until two or three years ago. I can't remember where I read about it, but ended up making it for the blog. It was such fun! I had to order the tapioca back then AND the oversize straws. Imagine it's more readily available now.
I'm in shock to have gone back over your posts and read what's happened to you and your family. I'm so sorry....please accept my deepest sympathy.

    1. That's so funny you had to order everything, I was lucky to find the oversized straws at Big Lots, they are good for thick milkshakes. I have two great Asian stores near me that I can get most anything. I am friends with the Korean store's owner and she will order something if I want her to. Her daughter goes to the school I work at and is a frequent flyer to the health room (where I work) so I know her well :)

Thank you for your condolences, it is still a shock to us all.

  8. Hi Lyndsey! This bubble tea was a craze many years ago and I think it is still popular. I do agree it is a fun drink. Your mum's crockery collection is lovely. I love collecting nice bowls and stuff too but then there's the problem of where to keep them. My house is so full of stuff already :)

  12. Hi Lyndsey, yes...best to make your own bubbles tea. Those sell in cafe, they add lots of colouring which it's bad for our health. Love your vintage collection, they care beautiful.

    Have a wonderful weekend.

  14. I love Mika's look at that tea. She's just waiting to slurp it up! :)

I love those old dishes. Beautiful. We have been visiting antique stores in Washington when we visit friends there and I often see bowls like the ones my mom has and think about getting some for me. One of these days I will.
